Kanchanaburi War Cemetery

Kanchanaburi War Cemetery is only a short distance from the site of the former ‘Kanburi’, the prisoner of war base camp through which most of the prisoners passed on their way to other camps. It was created by the Army Graves Service who transferred to it graves along the southern half of railway, from Bangkok to Nieke. More than 5,000 Commonwealth and 1,800 Dutch casualties are buried or commemorated in the cemetery. The cemetery was designed by Colin St Clair Oakes.

Kanchanaburi War Cemetery

Kanchanaburi is 129 kilometres West-North-West of Bangkok. The Kanchanaburi Memorial is located in Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, which is situated in the North-Western part of the town along Saeng Chuto Road. A Commission signpost faces the cemetery on the opposite side of the road.

The cemetery and memorial registers are kept in the cemetery service area and must be requested from one of the gardeners. The location or design of this site, makes wheelchair access impossible.

The Kanchanaburi War Cemetery contains the remains of 6,982 Australian, Dutch and British war prisoners who lost their lives during the construction of the Death Railway.

Humbling

A must to visit and not just for Australians. The museum across the road is also worth visiting and take the time to travel to Hell Fire Pass. I was moved to tears throughout the whole trip.

Very moving but also very sad

When I saw the headstones and the age of those young men who died in such appalling conditions it brought tears to my eyes. I would also like to thank the Thais for their devotion in the upkeep of the cemetery. One headstone stuck in my mind,it read “He died that England might live”

Immaculately kept

This cemetery is easy to find and is ideal to visit after having been in the Railway Museum opposite it. Very impressed with how immaculately it is being kept. A good time for reflection.

From this cemetery we just strolled down the main road and found local markets too which were a delight

ANZAC history

Wow, what a moving place. I was nearly moved to tears walking around the cemetery, reading the plaques of the Aussie soldiers. Most were so young, many my own age or younger. So hard to imagine what it would have been like for these heroes.
Visiting this cemetery & nearby museum really made the legend of the ANZAC spirit real to my wife & I, so much so that I want to go back & visit Hellfire Pass on ANZAC day in the future.
‘ They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning… We will remember them.’
